The story behind the existence of Freecolab ZW

From RSD to Freecolab ZW

Notes from the team

Chapter 1 : The RSD

"It started in 2022, right before exams. Pressure was high. Time was low. All I needed were past exam papers. The internet should’ve made it easy. Instead, it felt like walking into a trap. Click. Ad. Redirect. Fake download button. “Your device may be at risk.” Every promising link led to confusion, endless pop-ups, malware warnings, and websites designed to mislead. Even when you thought you’d found the right paper, you weren’t safe. Which button was real? Which one would hijack your screen? What should’ve taken minutes drained hours. We didn’t have a name for it back then. That came later, in late 2024. We called it RSD — the Resource Search Dilemma."

It was 2024. This time, the idea was simple: build an ad-free digital library where students could search, view, and download resources without fighting pop-ups, fake buttons, or malware traps. Clean. Simple. Stress-free. But there was one big question. Who was going to gather all the papers and books? Silence.

No single person could do it alone. And that’s when the real idea sparked. If one student struggles, thousands do. So why not build something powered by everyone?

That’s how ZimsecLib was born an open platform where anyone could upload a PDF and help the next student in line. A library built by students, for students.

We launched it. And then something unexpected happened. The idea started growing bigger than we imagined. So we took it down. Because this wasn’t just a website anymore. It was becoming something more.

Chapter 3: Dzidziso neFundo

"In 2025, a new name emerged one that had been quietly shaping the vision for a long time before finally coming into its own. It began with a simple but powerful question: What if we could connect everyone, wherever they are? What if people had the freedom to create, learn, and contribute on their own time? And what if those willing to help others by sharing what they have could do even more on one unified platform? The idea was to build a space where people could draw inspiration from others while inspiring in return an open, collaborative environment that nurtures productivity and positive social momentum. From that vision, the name Freecolab was born, meaning Free Collaboration...a reflection of the belief in openness, connection, and shared growth. Before Freecolab, there was Dzidziso neFundo. Freecolab stands on the blueprint laid before it, shaped by numerous iterations, lessons, and evolving ideas. It is the result of a journey refined over time, strengthened by purpose, and driven by the desire to make collaboration truly free and accessible to all."
